Feature review: High RPM spin speeds on your washer

Manufacturers are adding more and more features on front load washing machines and high RPM (revolutions per minute) speeds are one of them.  High RPM speeds are being marketed as reducing drying times due to the higher water extraction. Older top load machines had a typical spin speed of aprx 400 RPM. It is common for most front load washing machines to have 900 - 1100 RPM. Less water in your clothes means less drying time in your dryer which leads to lower electricity/gas cost.

There is a trade off as these high RPM are reached. Front load washers are generally very quiet and do not vibrate when washing. All of that changes once the spin cycle kicks in. Most of the noise and vibration will occur once the spin cycle reaches top speed. Noise and vibration tend to increase as the spin speed increases. Clothes tend to develop creases more deeply as spin speeds increase.

Overall high RPM spin speeds are a nice feature to have if used wisely. Use lower spin speeds for delicates, and if you find your front load washing machine vibrates too much choose the lower spin speed option.
